MAY SHABBAT: BY CHILDREN, FOR CHILDREN
So you went for a checkup and your doctor says, “The blood pressure is okay, the cholesterol I’m not too worried about, but you could use with a little kvelling.” Who are you to defy a doctor’s orders? Come out and kvell at our 3rd annual Children’s Shabbat Service, where our children take centre stage. Each grade in our Jewish Studies Program has prepared a reading for the service, which will also include solo readings in English and Hebrew. A potluck dinner will follow the service. Please bring a dish to feed eight hungry adults (hungry Jewish adults, if you get our “What, no more blintzes?” drift). No nuts, please.

SHABBAT IN THE SUMMER
Some people find all they’re looking for at the CNE. Others consider the Sky Dome their shrine. One DJC member is said to have wept when Party for Two closed its doors on the Danforth, muttering something about Tantric sex. Spiritual fulfillment comes in all shapes and sizes. For those seeking a small-scale gathering where Shabbat is celebrated in low-key but meaningful ways, we invite you to join as at our next Shabbat service. It has been very gratifying to see new faces at recent services. If you’re new to our community, keen to test the waters but don’t want to get in over your head, please call Kathy or Emil at the number below for the scoop on our user-friendly services.

PURIM PARTY WRAP UP
True, our wonderful Purim party in February may seem like ancient history right now, but this is our first chance to give thanks to a dynamic team who helped put it all together. Heartfelt thanks to Jackie Goldman, Susan Litchen, R.J. Ross and Karen Robbins for the countless hours they put in to making this one count. The carnival was the usual blend of wide-eyed kids with ear-to-ear smiles, and contrite parents trying to scarf down a sixth hamantashen without getting caught. The reading of the megillah as performed by Danny Bakan and Alan Merovitz was icing on the cake. It is events like these that fortify our community, and they couldn’t happen without members taking the initiative to see it through (see above) and all the other volunteers who gave of their time. You know who you are. We thank you, and our children thank you.

DJC BOOK CLUB: THE NEXT CHAPTER
The reviews are in following our inaugural season and by all accounts the DJC book club evenings were thoroughly enjoyed. The discussions were freeflowing, always stimulating and provocative. By popular demand, we’ve been renewed for next year. We’ll stick with a successful format and invite facilitators in to share their favourite books. Please consider joining us next year. Books and facilitators will be announced shortly.
