Exploring Judaism: December's focus is the spiritual meaning of 'consecration' found within the symbols and rituals of the menorah and the miracle of the oil. We will reflect upon the meaning of Jewish identity through the lens of Hanukah.

2009 AGM ANNOUNCEMENT

We are seeking three community members to serve on the DJC Nominating Committee, which will help determine the slate of nominees to the 2009 DJC Board of Directors.
*Update:
Following our e-mail notice of this message last Friday, we have secured 2 members; we now need
1 more person for the nominating committee…

This year we will be thanking two Board members for their leadership and dedication. Two current Board members wish to stand for election for a second term and the community will be electing two new members to fill the vacant positions.

The Nominating Committee is appointed by the Chair of the DJC Board, with the approval of the Board.  It is composed of five members, two of whom are members of the Board of Directors.  This year’s Nominating Committee, chaired by Allen Flaming and Josie Lalonde, will be recruiting community members to stand for the two vacant positions on the Board of Directors. The time commitment is approximately 5 hours.

If you are interested in sitting on the Nominating Committee, please contact Kathy Miller (info@djctoronto.com; 416.580.6303) by Wednesday, December 10th.

If you are interested in standing for election to the Board or know of someone you would like to nominate to the Board, please send their name to Kathy Miller (info@djctoronto.com; 416.580.6303).

One of the first tasks of the Nominating Committee will be to determine the needs of the Board and the community. The Board has requested that members with financial and fundraising experience be recruited.  The Nominating Committee will also be looking for people who can work well on a Board that makes decisions by consensus, who have a demonstrated enthusiasm for the DJC and who want to contribute to our community.

The membership will elect the new Board members at the 2009 DJC Annual General Meeting.  We will be announcing the location, date and time of the AGM early in the New Year.

It is very important we find people who reflect DJC values and can provide effective and committed leadership. It is only through member participation that the DJC will continue to be a vital and meaningful role in so many of our lives. Please consider volunteering for these important committees.

The Funeral Party

THE FUNERAL PARTY, BY LUDMILA ULITSKAYA
FACILITATOR: ANNA SHTERNSIS

The Funeral Party, a novella by award-winning Russian author Ludmila Ulitskaya, is about a group of Russian emigrees living in New York City who are gathered around the deathbed of Alik, a charismatic beloved Jewish artist. Their various relationships with him and their experiences of homeland and exile are portrayed with humour and pathos. “A smart and prickly book which echoes Isaac Bashevis Singer and perhaps a dose of Samuel Beckett as well...” New York Times. “[A] riotously funny, quirky and tender love story whose themes of love, loss, and identity soar over the boundaries of language and geography.” New York Times Book Review.

Anna Shternsis is Al and Malka Green Assistant Professor in Yiddish Studies at the University of Toronto.
She is the author of Soviet and Kosher: Jewish Popular Culture in the Soviet Union, 1923-1939 (Indiana University Press, 2006).

COMMUNITY NEWS

Mired with madness at the mall? Tired of tinkering with tree tinsel? Longing to leave the latkes in the lurch?

Come join me for a relaxing evening of song at an intimate Cabbagetown venue. With the soothing guitar accompaniment of Nathan Hiltz I will be singing some jazz standards, some of my trademark novelty songs and a tribute to the venue's composer of the month: Irving Berlin.

The first set begins at 9:30 pm so you can dine upstairs beforehand (20% off food if you reserve for the show) or simply drop by anytime for a drink and some nibbles. This is your chance to duck out of that dull office party and pamper yourself with a calming drink and some soulful music; it'll be a rejuvenating break in what is an otherwise crazy month! Flory Jagoda, December 6 - Tickets On Sale

Flory JagodaFlory Jagoda
Saturday December 6, 8pm
Glenn Gould Studio

CBC Broadcasting Centre, 250 Front St. West
$20 in advance, $25 day-of
Tickets available by phone at 416-872-4255 or online at Glenn Gould Studio Box Office

Born and raised into a family of musicians in Sarajevo over 80 years ago, since emigrating to Washington, DC in 1946 Flory Jagoda has dedicated her life to keeping alive the rich musical tradition of Bosnia's Jews, earning her the moniker "Keeper of the Flame." Her music is a unique amalgam of Jewish, Spanish, and Balkan influences, sung in Ladino, the ancient Judeo-Spanish language. Jagoda's live performances feature authentic Sephardic songs and her own original compositions, woven together with compelling tales about the music and the lost Jewish world of Sarajevo. In 2002 she was honoured with a National Heritage Fellowship from the National Endowment for the Arts for her contribution to preserving a traditional art form. Among the last surviving matriarchs of one of Judaism's rarest and richest cultural traditions, Flory Jagoda is a unique treasure not to be missed!

The December 6th performance will include a number of seasonal songs, including Flory's own world-famous Hanukah anthem "Ocho Kandelikos" (Eight Candles). In addition to Jagoda on vocals and guitar, she will be joined by her accompanist Howard Bass (guitar), her apprentice Susan Gaeta (guitar, vocals), and three members of Toronto's Beyond the Pale, including Aleksandar Gajic (violin), Milos Popovic (accordion), and Eric Stein (mandolin).

Click here to listen to audio samples of Flory Jagoda from her CD Baby page.

The concert is generously supported by the Nathan and & Lily  Silver Family Foundation.
