From our members: REPORTS ON 2 WONDERFUL DJC GATHERINGS!

Challah Chappiness: We laughed, We kneaded, We conquered!

people On Sunday, January 27th, 10 brave DJC women met at the home of Marilyn Minden to conquer their fear of challah baking. When DJC Women's "Retreatees" 'fessed up to a life free from challah baking, this event was born.

peopleOrganized by Nikki Weiss and Diane Wise (relative challah neophytes themselves), DJCers "rose" to the occasion producing dozens of loaves of braided beauty. Participants raved "My challah was wonderful! Sweet and just the right density. We had challah for dinner!" …more baking coming soon to an oven near you.

DJC BOOK CLUB
booksOur January meeting (The History of Love) of the DJC Book Club was one of our most stimulating and lively evenings. It was led by Cynthia Good, Director of the Creative Book Publishing Program at Humber College. Her passion for the book and insights into the author created much discussion and we all came away feeling it was a great evening. **Special thanks to our hosts Linda and Alvin Shadlyn for allowing us to use their lovely home.

Please see more details to follow in this newsletter about our upcoming meetings…read on!

Hey, DJC Youth (or your parents)!

The DJC Youth Group (DJCYG) kicked off their inaugural event in December with a movie night and gab session, and it was lots of fun.  Since then more planning has been underway and there is a full range of ideas for events to occur throughout the year - and beyond.
Plans include social action and volunteer involvement (...you can rack up those hours!); fundraising efforts for various causes; inter-faith events with other youth groups...and more!  And of course, lots more social gatherings strictly for fun.  Come on out and get involved!

Next up is an event geared to get the group better acquainted with one another, and more unified.

Lost In translation
Thursday, April 3, 2008
LOST IN TRANSLATION, BY EVA HOFFMAN
FACILITATOR: ANDREA MOST

Eva Hoffman's penetrating and lyrical memoir, “Lost in Translation”, tells the spiritual and intellectual odyssey of a young Jewish girl who leaves post-war Cracow with her family for Vancouver in the late 1950s, and ultimately ends up working among New York's literati, becoming editor of the New York Times Book Review. Hoffman writes a chronicle of upward mobility, but with a twist, focusing on language, “linguistic dispossession,” and the condition of exile. The book is a “...masterful mix of the personal and the political...” (Publisher's weekly).

Andrea Most, associate professor of English at the University of Toronto, is the 2004 recipient of the Polyani Prize for Literature. Among her many published writings, her recent book “Making Americans: Jews and the Broadway Musical” won the Kurt Weil Prize for distinguished scholarship on music theatre. Last year she facilitated a terrific discussion on “Maus” for the DJC Book Group.

Green Bayit/House Tips And Tools

Every month, we will share a tip or tool in the newsletter that helps reduce energy in the home, the focus of the DJC's Green House/Bayit Campaign for the Jewish Year 5768. This month, we look to saving energy consumption and costs from electronic devices.

lightTip #1: Plant leafy (deciduous) trees on the sunny side of your house. During the summer they provide shade and in the winter they will shed their leaves to let the warming sunshine through.

Tip #2: Plant pine or fir trees on the north side of your house to provide an energy saving windbreak.
