A ROARING SUCCESS!

bandThe second Danforth Jewish Circle Coffeehouse, held on Saturday, March 7, was a roaring success!
With about 100 people attending, the Trane Studio was standing room only and the audience was treated to an evening of poetry, script and song.
Emcee extraordinaire Rex Hagon kept the evening and raffle prizes moving, and the show highlighted the impressive range of talent that is found in the DJC community. Everyone was left with a renewed sense of our wonderful community.  And best of all, we raised a handsome sum that will go directly into DJC coffers!

Many thanks go to Rex, all of the performers – you were amazing! – and the DJC Adult Programming Committee. Most of all, thank you to those who attended the event and helped to make it an evening that we’ll be sure to remember… and hopefully repeat next year!

Aging and Saging: Approaches to wisdom as we move along the path of life

In the aging process, three factors are associated with longevity:
Control over one's decision
Continuing engagement with new challenges
Bonds of intimacy

Other factors that help us retain our clarity and vitality:
Daily movement or exercise
Adaptability to loss
Sense of humour
Adventurousness
Willingness to try new things
Flexibility
Engagement with an outside interest
Optimism

In short, at every stage of aging, life provides us with new possibilities. Rather than focusing on our losses, we may instead embrace what is unfolding as another way of being that can yield new experiences and expand our sense of life.

Remembering and passing on family story as well as piecing and knitting together components of our histories to the next generation is another element that can be very meaningful. Remembering also helps sew family ties and bring a community of remembrance together. Bar or Bat Mitzvah is a perfect time for the elders in the community to share stories about their grandparents and their childhood experiences.

Finally, real losses do come with aging including death of loved ones, serious health problems, decreased mobility and autonomy. Finding ways to honour that process while remaining forward looking is the challenge of aging and saging.

We will gather on Shabbat morning and share the Torah of Aging and Saging together, drawing on our personal experience, expectations and sources of strength and wisdom for the journey.

When: Saturday, April 18, 10:00 am- 12:00 noon

THE ORIENTALIST, BY TOM REISS
FACILITATOR: IVAN KALMAR

The Orientalist is the true story of Muslim prince Kurban Said, who wrote the bestselling novel, Essad and Bey that made him a celebrity in Nazi Germany and allowed him to marry an international heiress.
The only problem? Said's real name was Lev Nussimbaum, and he was born a Russian Jew. Tom Reiss' thoroughly researched biography explores Nussimbaum's colourful and adventurous life, mixing in a cultural and political history of the early 20th century in the process. "Marvelously written, and imbued with scholarly thinking on a forgotten tradition of Jewish-Islamic accord." Kirkus Reviews. "A Brainy, nimble, remarkable book." Chicago Tribune.

Ivan d. Kalmar is the author of The Trotskys, Freuds and Woody Allens, Portrait of a Culture, which won him in Canada the Tannenbaum Prize for Jewish Cultural History. Kalmar more recently co-edited Orientalism and the Jews with Derek Penslar, and has published on how Jews and Muslims were imagined together in western cultural history. In particular, he has written about Moorish style synagogues and about the romantic orientalism of figures such as Benjamin Disraeli. He is at work completing a book provisionally entitled Bible, Harem, Empire: A Cultural History of Orientalism. He teaches in the Department of Anthropology at the University of Toronto.

Spring greetings From DJC YG!

This month, the DJCYG volunteered at its last Out of the Cold event of the year! It has been another wonderful year with the great people from Eastminster Church.

Earlier in the month, Nogah Kornburg, of Leadership Education Ambassadors: Darfur (LEAD) ran an interactive educational program about the atrocities taking place right now in Sudan. We learned the real meaning of choice-less choices while navigating through the lives of a fictional Darfuri family.

Coming up for the end of March is a potluck Shabbat! We are getting together for a night of fun and alternative Jewish youth culture.

In April, we will be having our second annual 'Iron Chef: Passover Edition.' The youth group is getting together for a night of competitive cooking (and of course eating!) and will enjoy an outdoor adventure in the spirit of Earth Day!

Enjoy the Sun!

A request for B’Nei Mitzvah students, re: "Holocaust Twinning"

I am looking for Holocaust survivors to meet with the B'Nei Mitzvah students from the Danforth Jewish Circle.  This is part of a program called "Holocaust Twinning".  The idea is that they meet with a survivor one-on-one for an interview (only once).  They ask the survivor for a story about a person they knew who died before being able to have a Bar/Bat Mitzvah, and then at the ceremony, the student dedicates their Bar/Bat Mitzvah to that child.

We are having trouble finding survivors to talk to the students, and the Holocaust Centre is unable to help with this. If anyone has any contact with a survivor who might want to share a story, please feel free to contact me directly: alysse.rich@gmail.com.  They don't necessarily have to be survivors of camps, etc....anyone who had a personal connection to the Holocaust would be great.

  Thanks,
Alysse Rich

Bar Mitzvah - A Community Invitation

starWe would like to invite the Danforth Jewish Circle community to join with our family and friends as our son, David Klein, is called to Torah as a Bar Mitzvah on Saturday, May 2, 2009, at 10:00 a. m. at the Eastminster United Church.
The Shabbat morning service will be led by Rabbi Michael Marmur - presently the Dean of Hebrew Union College in Jerusalem, and Debbie Friedman - the inspirational American Jewish composer and singer.
There will be a Kiddush in the Hurndale room following the service.  Please contact paulaklein@sympatico.ca to Rsvp.  It would be most meaningful to have our congregation join with us for this momentous occasion in our family's life.

challahOur first DJC In-home Shabbat for Families and young children was a great success!

There were several families in attendance and numerous young people from baby to about age 9. Some brought candles, we did a prayer for children, and everyone did brachot together.
We all enjoyed the food and socializing and had a wonderful evening.

Please look for more news about our next event in upcoming newsletters.
