LETTER FROM JOSIE LALONDE, DJC CHAIR

Dear Fellow DJC members,

I’m writing this to you as many of us are getting ready for Passover – cleaning our kitchens, preparing to gather with family and friends, and thinking about the meaning that age-old Pesach traditions will hold for us this year. And as we prepare, we are noticing the first signs of spring – new life and renewal is happening all around us.

From its inception, the DJC has welcomed new energy and reinterpretation while honouring longstanding community members and Jewish traditions. This year, we held a beautiful Shabbat service to welcome our new members. And we are looking forward to a fabulous Bar/Bat Mitzvah party on April 17th, which will pay tribute to our history, to the vibrant community we have become, and to a future of exciting possibilities.

Your valued contributions throughout our current fundraising campaign will help us continue to strengthen our services and programs into the future. If you have not yet given, please consider doing so. We are grateful for your membership and support and simply could not exist without you.

You may have heard about two exciting new initiatives that are underway at the DJC. The first will develop our capacity to better support our members through life cycle events, both joyful and sad. Your survey responses showed us that we need to play a more active role in offering this support. The second initiative will explore our community’s spiritual leadership needs. This will include a task force to look at our longer term rabbinical needs. It also has included a search for short term leadership for Shabbat services, Torah studies and High Holidays – and we have already had the pleasure of studying Torah and welcoming Shabbat with two visiting rabbis.

Many of you attended our recent Shabbat service co-led by Rabbi Miriam Margles and Cantor Lisa Kent. I am thrilled to announce that Rabbi Margles will lead our High Holiday services this year. Her calm and thoughtful presence, artistic creativity, and dedication to Jewish learning and spirituality will be a wonderful complement to our unique and beautiful High Holiday services.

I thank each of you for your continued support and interest in the DJC. And I wish you all a meaningful and joyful Pesach!

MARCH/APRIL EVENT DETAILS

DJC MOVIE CLUB: features… PAPER CLIPS

filmPAPER CLIPS is the moving and inspiring documentary film that captures how students in a small, rural community of less than two thousand people nestled in the mountains of Tennessee responded to lessons about the Holocaust with a promise to honor every lost soul by collecting one paper clip for each individual exterminated by the Nazis. Despite the fact that they had previously been unaware of and unfamiliar with the Holocaust, their dedication was absolute. Their plan was simple but profound. The amazing result, a memorial railcar filled with 11 million paper clips (representing 6 million Jews and 5 million gypsies, homosexuals and other victims of the Holocaust) which stands permanently in their schoolyard, is an unforgettable lesson of how a committed group of children and educators can change the world one classroom at a time.

BOOK CLUB NEWS

—ANNOUNCEMENT—

Dear DJC Community,

After a number of years on the book club organizing committee, three of us have decided it is time to move on.  Diana Chastain, Christa Marvy and I have very much enjoyed the opportunity to devise interesting, educational and enjoyable evenings of shared reading pleasure. But now it's time for a change of leadership.
Many of you are stalwart and keen participants in the book club. We are hoping that you will step up now to take our place by assuming a more proactive role.
Because next year's schedule needs to be organized this spring, we would like to hear from volunteers as soon as possible. Of course we will meet with you to help in the transition of the committee. And one of the committee members, Sheila Miller, will be staying on and provide continuity.
The book club has become a beloved tradition at the DJC. Please help it continue by volunteering! Contact Kathy Miller, at info@djctoronto.com, and she will forward your e-mails to me.
With the hope of many more years of happy reading at the DJC!

Jill Solnicki
Chair, the Book Club

THE COMPLETE WORKS OF ISAAC BABEL

Thursday, April 15, 2010
THE COMPLETE WORKS OF ISAAC BABEL:
edited by Natalie Babel, Translated By peter Constantine
FACILITATOR: ANNA SHTERNSHIS

Arguably the best book of short stories published in 2001, The Complete Works of Isaac Babel should affirm Babel's place among the top Russian short story writers. One of the great Russian writers of the 20th century, his career was tragically cut short when he was murdered by Stalin's regime. Much of his work was confiscated at his arrest, and has never resurfaced. Now for the first time, all of his surviving work has been assembled into one volume. This collection is delightful in its organization: the stories grouped by periods, feature introductions, and maps. "He is a writer who stabs the mind and the heart and the inner eye with short, savage strokes." The Complete Works of Isaac Babel is a book that you will reread all your life and then pass on to your grandchildren.

Anna Shternshis is the Al and Malka Green Assistant Professor in Yiddish studies at the University of Toronto. She is the author of Soviet and Kosher: Jewish Popular Culture in the Soviet Union, 1923-1939 (Indiana University Press, 2006).

Hi all,

I'm a member of DJC, and am hoping I can impose on you and other members to find support for a dear friend of mine — a young man who has come on hard times and needs some support in finding a cheap place to live. I'm writing to you on his behalf.

Doug is a professional tech support guy, but has been unable to work for close to a year, and so has not been getting much of an income. He's currently on assistance from Jewish Family Services. The situation is that he has just been asked to find a new apartment — the apartment he's currently renting is a room in the basement of a house owned by a lovely woman on Bathurst and Wilson, but she's putting the house up for sale. He needs to find another spot to live that he can afford — between $500 - $575 / month for rent.

He's a great guy and is in need of some help to find inexpensive living accommodations.

I'm wondering if you can help me reach a lot of people who might help. MANY, MANY thanks for getting back to me with some ideas for Doug.

All the best,
Suzanne Sherkin
