The DJC Responds to Members' Needs

The DJC volunteers are joining together in new ways to support members through difficult times. At the High Holidays services we heard about the Life Cycle Events Supports Steering Committee that was asked by the Board to figure out how to engage volunteers to meet more members' needs.

We also heard from the Chesed committee which is the first working group and is focusing on providing practical supports and information to people around serious illness and mourning. For example, they have already reached out to members of our community who lost loved ones and provided them our condolences and practical supports during the first weeks of mourning. Next, they will be looking at what information, education, and practical supports can be offered to people experiencing serious illnesses. In future DJC Newsletters, the Chesed committee will share more about their volunteer requirements.

Based on the success of the Chesed committee, the Steering Committee is considering how to address the needs of families around events like marriage, birth, bris, bar mitzvah, and divorce. We'll be looking at information, education and support that can meet the diverse needs our community. Our intention is to break these down into manageable groupings and over time, develop a rich resource.
*If you would be interested in helping with all or part of this working group, please email us at info@djctoronto.com.

In the months to come, we will keep you posted about information and supports that are being developed by our volunteers and suggest other ways for you to get more involved.

NOVEMBER EVENT DETAILS

DANFORTH JEWISH READING CIRCLE

Wednesday, November 3, 2010
LIGHT FELL, BY EVAN FALLENBERG
FACILITATED BY CYNTHIA GOOD

Light Fell"Evan Fallenberg's novel, Light Fell, centres on the preparation for a family reunion. Twenty years have passed since Joseph left behind his entire life – his wife Rebecca, his five sons, his father and the religious Israeli farming community where he grew up – when he fell in love with a man, the genius rabbi Yoel Rozenzweig. Their affair is long over, but its echoes continue to reverberate through the lives of Joseph, Rebecca, and their sons in ways that none of them could have predicted. Now, for his fiftieth birthday, Joseph is preparing to have his five sons and the daughter-in-law he has never met spend the Sabbath with him in the Tel Aviv apartment penthouse he shares with a man. "Light Fell…raises brave questions about the nature of family and betrayal, rupture and healing." (San Francisco Chronicle) Light Fell won the American Library Association's Stonewall Book Award, and the Edmund White Award for debut fiction.

Cynthia Good is director of the Creative Book Publishing Program at Humber College, and former president of Penguin Group (Canada). At Penguin she originated the Penguin's Canadian Program, which has grown to one of the most successful in Canada, boasting a list of premier Canadian writers. She has taught in both Ryerson University's and Centennial College's publishing certificate programs, and been a featured speaker on cultural, literary and business subjects at many universities and colleges across Canada.

The 10th International Diaspora Film Festival
Opens with a Tribute to
The Green Movement of Iran

Back to the Roots is the theme of the 10th anniversary of the IDFF as we pay tribute to the Iranian roots of our festival. What began in 2001 as the Iranian Diaspora Film Festival quickly evolved into the International Diaspora Film Festival.

The festival opens with The Twenty Days that Shook Tehran, an underground documentary with an original twist. The film looks at the final twenty days leading to the much-disputed presidential election through the eyes of an Iranian theatre group. The screening will be followed by a lively panel discussion on the Green Movement with well-known political analysts.
For complete film descriptions and schedule please visit our website www.diasporafilmfest.com

The festival runs from 2 to 7 November 2010, at Innis Town Hall, 2 Sussex Ave.,Toronto M5S 1J5 (off St. George, one block south of Bloor, Subway St. George).

Admission is $10/$8 students and seniors. A festival pass ($80) includes the closing concert. To reserve tickets please email (recommended) info@diasporafilmfest.com  or call 416.571.2150.

DJC member Alison Pick needs your help to make her novel, Far to Go, a Canada Reads Top Book of the Decade. Far to Go tells the story of a Czech Jewish family during the lead-up to WWII. Rights have been sold in five countries, and the novel has appeared here in Canada to rave reviews (see below). If you'd like to vote for Far to Go just follow this link to the Canada Reads website. Thanks so much!

What the Critics are Saying About Far to Go: "[...] very deftly structured and the storytelling is seamless. [...] Far to Go appears poised to gain a wide and significant readership, and deservedly so." - 'The Globe and Mail'

"A novel that should have made the just released Giller longlist...it is not only essential reading; it is further proof that Alison Pick is one of Canada's outstanding authors, no matter her age." - The Owen Sound Sun Times

"I read Far to Go straight through and thought it one of the very best of the new books published this fall...a brilliantly written, beautifully paced novel, by a writer who knows how to hold the readers attention – and heart." - www.parrysoundbooks.com www.alisonpick.com

INTERFAITH COUPLES

My name is Miriam Cross & I'm a student at Ryerson University's School of Continuing Education, working towards my certificate in Magazine and Web Publishing.

I am looking for interfaith couples in the GTA to interview for a parenting article. The story will explore how parents of two different faiths deal with decisions on how to raise their children, and how they make the collision of cultures and faiths work. If you are interested or need more information, please contact Miriam Cross at cross.miriam@gmail.com or 416.841.1556 as soon as possible.

The article is for my Advanced Feature Writing class at Ryerson, with the aim of later publishing it in a Canadian magazine.

Thank you very much!
