DJC B'NEI MITZVAH PROGRAM
The Danforth Jewish Circle is offering a one-year program culminating in a group B'Nei Mitzvah ceremony held in the spring (May 2012). This program is open to all students wanting to participate in a group Bar or Bat Mitzvah. In keeping with the philosophy and approach of the DJC's Jewish Studies program, the B'Nei Mitzvah class will address issues of Jewish identity, tikun olam and social justice, and will foster connection to Jewish peers and community. The B'Nei students will each prepare a D'var Torah (which involves researching and writing a short speech on a topic related to Judaism) and a Torah Portion/Parasha will be shared among the group.
Please join us at the Open House for any questions and to get more information about next year's program.
*Please note: membership in the Danforth Jewish Circle community is required for participation in the B'Nei Mitzvah program.

DJC READING CIRCLE: APRIL 28 SESSION

Thursday, April 28, 2011
ABSURDISTAN,
BY GARY SHTEYNGART
FACILITATED BY ANNA SHTERNSIS
With humour and insight into the folly of our modern world, Shteyngart's Absurdistan chronicles the unusual and hazardous life events of Misha Vainberg, the 325-pound son of the 1,238th-richest man in Russia. Amid much socio-political noise, in places where everyone has an angle or a disguise, the book's endearing characters, despite their shabby pursuits, draw the reader in. Shteyngart paints a vivid and brutal picture of the kind of strife that rakes third-world oil-rich countries, and spares no reproach for the American interests that bleed them. And, somehow, in all of this, he gives us a love story that works. Absurdistan, published in 2008, was chosen as one of the 10 best books of the year by The New York Times Book Review and Time Magazine as well as a book of the year by the Washington Post, Chicago Tribune and San Francisco Chronicle. In June 2010 Shteyngart was named as one of The New Yorker magazine's "20 under 40" luminary fiction writers.
Anna Shternsis is the Al and Malka Green Assistant Professor in Yiddish studies at the University of Toronto. She is the author of Soviet and Kosher: Jewish Popular Culture in the Soviet Union, 1923-1939 (Indiana University Press, 2006).

"Toronto/Tel Aviv Swap"
If you know of anyone who would like to be in Tel Aviv from mid-June to mid-August, I know a couple who have a lovely two bedroom, two bathroom apt in Central Tel Aviv that they will "swap" for a nice place somewhere in "Central Toronto" near a subway, cafes, etc. Their kids and grandkids are in the Yonge/Lawrence area.
Anyone interested can e-mail me: Janice_fricker@hotmail.com with the Subject "Toronto/Tel Aviv Swap" and I'll pass along the contact info.
