November/December 2011
CONTENTS:
Our circle continues to grow, and we were delighted to welcome new members at our first Shabbat of the year. New faces and familiar ones met and mingled, and we’re committed to offering engaging programs to one and all.
Rabbi Miriam’s “Pathways into Jewish Prayer” got off to an auspicious start as a few dozen curious souls gathered for the first of three sessions on how to better understand and weave prayer into our lives. Two more sessions remain, so it’s not too late to join the discussion.
We’re pleased to announce that a new season of DJC Movie Nights is being launched. A good film + a good nosh = a good night out. What’s not to like? Our annual women’s retreat is coming up and promises to be as invigorating and inspiring as always. And, closer to home, our Shabbat services are a great way to kindle the soul on a frosty winter’s night.

SCHOOL NEWS - Update!
We’ve having a very exciting first term in the Children’s Jewish studies program! All of our teachers—new and returning—are contributing to our updated curriculum, and we have a brand new music specialist helping us learn new songs about Shabbat and Chanukah.
Early in the term, the students studied some of the holidays: Rosh Hashanah, Yom Kippur, and Sukkot. Our JK- Kita 2 students focused on songs and blessings for Shabbat. Kita 4, 5, and 6 students learned about havdallah and mitzvot, and will go on a field trip in December to paint ceramic mezzuzot.
Recently, in a school-wide program, Rabbi Miriam and the drumming program “Rhythmic by Nature” joined us to celebrate & learn about Simchat Torah.
The B’Nei Mitzvah class is working hard with their teacher to prepare to become Jewish adults, and they will embark on the first ever B’nei Mitzvah class overnight in January, in collaboration with the Habonim Jewish Heritage School.
We are looking forward to another wonderful term in all of our programs!

Pathways into Jewish Prayer with Rabbi Miriam Margles
This monthly series will delve into the meaning and experience of Jewish prayer. Combining learning about the various prayers with experiencing the prayers through song and silence, movement and meditation we will take our time becoming familiar with the language, imagery, choreography and significance of the prayers from the inside out. This series will be engaging both for those who feel like beginners in Jewish prayer and are seeking more background, as well as those familiar with prayer and are seeking to infuse their prayer lives with more depth and personal meaning. While the classes build on one another, participants are welcome to attend individual sessions.

Here’s what some past participants have said…
In spite of my fear going to the retreat knowing absolutely no one, by the end of the weekend I felt incredible connection with so many women that I left knowing I had found my community.
This was my 3rd retreat and I was feeling very nervous because for the first time I didn’t have a close pal attending with me. As the weekend progressed it was fully inclusive and engaging. One of the best retreats ever. Friendships and spirituality rekindled and women’s issues addressed through a Jewish lens — can’t wait for the next one… which I volunteered to help organize.
Flyer and Registration Form is here.
Early registration is encouraged as space is limited.

DJC Movie Night:
Woody Allen as You’ve Never Seen Him
It’s Woody Allen, but he’s not in a Woody Allen film. He didn’t write it. He didn’t direct it. But he stars in The Front, a drama about the price paid during the 1950s Hollywood blacklist, when lives were upended after writers, directors and other industry players were accused of having ties—direct and otherwise—to Communism. Allen plays a cashier who poses as a writer who submits scripts on behalf of blacklisted talents (hence the title). But the injustice around him pushes him to take a stand. Yes, Woody Allen as an unlikely hero.
We’ll gather to watch The Front on Saturday, December 3 at the home of Vlad Bregman at 15 Bayfield Crescent. Pre-show nosh begins at 7:30. Please bring non-messy nibblies for all to share and savour. The screening begins at 8:00 (running time: 95 mins), followed by a discussion afterwards for those whose idea of a nosh includes food for thought.

WHEN: SATURDAY, DECEMBER 3 @ 7:30 PM
WHERE: 15 Bayfield Crescent (home of Vlad Bregman)
WHAT TO BRING: A non- messy nibblie for all to share!
