Learning & Celebrating with the DJC Year-round
The High Holidays were a timely reminder of how nourishing a community can be. We hope you felt renewed, restored and maybe even a little challenged. And we hope you'll continue to weave the DJC into your life throughout the year.
We have a smorgasbord of upcoming programs and events: Friday night services (our first one to welcome new & returning members), learning more about prayer, a book club meeting, our annual women's retreat. As the new year unfolds we'll include such tried-and-true favourites as movie nights and in-home Shabbat services & more. There's something for everyone. . . including you.
So please, read on!

Pathways into Jewish Prayer with Rabbi Miriam Margles
This monthly series will delve into the meaning and experience of Jewish prayer. Combining learning about the various prayers with experiencing the prayers through song and silence, movement and meditation we will take our time becoming familiar with the language, imagery, choreography and significance of the prayers from the inside out. This series will be engaging both for those who feel like beginners in Jewish prayer and are seeking more background, as well as those familiar with prayer and are seeking to infuse their prayer lives with more depth and personal meaning. While the classes build on one another, participants are welcome to attend individual sessions.

DANFORTH JEWISH READING CIRCLE

TO THE END OF THE LAND, BY DAVID GROSSMAN
FACILITATED BY DEREK PENSLAR
David Grossman is an Israeli author of fiction, nonfiction, and youth and children's literature. His books have been translated into many languages and he was awarded the Prime Minister's Prize for Hebrew literature (1984) and the Israeli Publishers Association Prize for best Hebrew novel (1985). To The End of the Land is a powerful meditation on war, friendship, and family. Instead of celebrating her son Ofer’s discharge from the Israeli Army, Ora finds her life turned upside down and inside out when her son reenlists and is sent back to the front for a major offensive. Unable to bear the thought of sitting alone waiting for the notifiers to bring her bad news, the recently separated Ora decides to hike in the Galilee, where the toll exacted by living in a land and among a people constantly at war is excruciatingly evident. Grossman, whose own son was killed during the 2006 Israel-Lebanon conflict, writes directly from the heart in this scorching anti-war novel. Grossman lives in Mevasseret, Zion on the outskirts of Jerusalem.
Derek Penslar is the Samuel Zacks Professor of Jewish History at the University of Toronto. He has written or edited ten books, most recently: The Origins of Modern Israel: A Documentary History. He is a fellow of the Royal Society of Canada and the American Academy for Jewish Research. He has been a visiting professor at Harvard and Columbia, and next fall he will assume the Lewis Professorship of Israel Studies at Oxford.

Here’s what some past participants have said…
In spite of my fear going to the retreat knowing absolutely no one, by the end of the weekend I felt incredible connection with so many women that I left knowing I had found my community.
This was my 3rd retreat and I was feeling very nervous because for the first time I didn’t have a close pal attending with me. As the weekend progressed it was fully inclusive and engaging. One of the best retreats ever. Friendships and spirituality rekindled and women’s issues addressed through a Jewish lens — can’t wait for the next one… which I volunteered to help organize.
Flyer and Registration Form is here.
Early registration is encouraged as space is limited.
