Announcement of the Danforth Jewish Circle Annual General Meeting

Please mark your calendars for the upcoming Annual General Meeting (AGM) which will be held on Sunday, March 4, 2012 at 1:00 p.m. at Eastminster Church Hurndale room, 310 Danforth Avenue.

The AGM is an opportunity to hear an update on the DJC and elect members to the Board of Directors.

We hope that you will consider coming to the AGM to learn, give your input and show your support of the DJC.

Nominating Committee Report to the Membership

The Nominating Committee consists of two Board representatives and three community members who responded to a broad call for members. We were asked to reach out to the membership for recommendations, consider potential candidates, and present at the AGM a list of nominees to fill the vacant positions for a two year term.
There are five vacancies on the Board of Directors this year, and the Board has decided to add an additional Director.

A call for recommendations of nominees for the Nominating Committee to consider was sent to the membership on November 21, 2011. The Nominating Committee considered the recommendations and is pleased to present a strong list of nominees (click on links for nominees' bios):

View Bio Paul Axelrod (Director, currently completing his first 2-year term)
View Bio Margaret Cygelfarb (Director, currently completing the unfinished term of a resigned Director)
View Bio Carla Hathaway
View Bio Catherine Hayos
View Bio Michael Kanter (Director, currently completing the unfinished term of a resigned Director)
View Bio Shari Novick

In addition to the 3 returning and 3 new Directors listed above, there is another vacancy on the Board Directors due to a Director resignation. To fill vacancy of the remaining unexpired term (1 year), the Nominating Committee would like to introduce Alan Gotlib as a new Director. Pursuant to Article 5.6 of the DJC By-Laws, Alan will be presented and voted upon at the regular meeting of the Board of Directors to take place in conjunction with the Annual General Meeting. Alan's biography: (view bio)

You also have the opportunity to nominate DJC members by contacting the Board Chair by February 12, 2012:

Josie Lalonde josie.djc@gmail.com

Pursuant to DJC By-Law 9.8, we wish to remind the membership of their right to vote by proxy. A member may, by means of a written proxy, appoint a proxyholder to attend and act at a specific meeting of members, in the manner and to the extent authorized by the proxy. A proxyholder must be a member of the DJC.

We encourage all DJC members to come out to the AGM in support of members who have generously volunteered their time to serve our community by participating on the Board of Directors.

Your Nominating Committee,
Michael Kanter, Warren Morris, Lynne Raskin, Emil Sher, Ellen Waxman

booksSCHOOL NEWS - Update!

The term started off with many exciting lessons and events. In the primary grades, the classes have recently been focusing on biblical stories, especially those of Jacob's family, including the story of Joseph. Many of our students have recently brought home some "amazing technicolour dreamcoats" of their own! We are looking forward to learning about the holiday Tu B'shevat in the next couple of weeks.

In the older grades, students have been learning about Jewish history, kibbutzim, and learned some new songs with music specialist Carmel. Our school is looking forward to another amazing Purim event with Rabbi Miriam on March 8, and then a brand new school-wide Passover activity on April 5.

In addition, in the upcoming two weeks, we will be working on an exciting school-wide art project involving copper enamelling. The B'Nei Mitzvah class will go on their overnight March, and in the meantime, are busy working on their speeches, songs, and torah portions for their ceremony on May 12!

We are looking forward to a fun and learning filled term for our students of all ages.

FROM THAT PLACE AND TIME: A MEMOIR,
BY LUCY DAWIDOWICZ
FACILITATED BY KALMAN WEISER

From That Place and TimeLucy Dawidowicz, pioneering Holocaust historian, narrates her own remarkable memoir recalling the year (1938-1939) she spent as a student at YIVO (the Yiddish Scientific Institute) in Wilno (Vilna), Poland (today's Vilnius, Lithuania) and the role she played in reclaiming Jewish cultural treasures in the immediate aftermath of World War II. A graduate of both American public schools and Yiddish secular schools in New York City before traveling to Wilno, Dawidowicz reflects as much on the nature of Eastern European as American Jewish life, yielding fascinating insights into both. Lucy Dawidowicz was born in New York City, in 1915 and moved to Wilno, Poland in 1938 to learn Yiddish. Her writings include The War against the Jews, The Holocaust and the Historians, What is the Use of Jewish History?, On Equal Terms: Jews in America 1881-1991 as well as From That Place and Time? amongst others. She died in 1990.

Kalman Weiser is the Silber Family Professor of Modern Jewish Studies at York University. He is the co-editor of Czernowitz at 100: the First Yiddish Language Conference in Historical Perspective (2010) and author of the recently published Jewish People, Yiddish Nation. Noah Prylucki and the Folkists in Poland (2011).
