Bringing Light, Finding Warmth at the DJC

At this time of year, some of us crave the sun, others the comfort of community. While we can’t do much about the weather, we hope that you will find warmth at the DJC this month.

We begin to light the Chanukah candles this year on December 12 and we are kicking it off with a creative arts workshop inspired by Jewish text. We will also be hosting a Chanukah Kabbalat service and potluck dinner.

While we welcome the lights of Chanukah, we don’t disparage the darkness. Like Walt Whitman said, “every hour of the light and dark is a miracle.” We find importance in last month’s exploration of anti-Semitism through film night and reading circle, engaging in learning about residential schools from Indigenous community members, and reflecting on Islamophobia over a Shabbat dinner for young adults.

In December, you can join Rabbi Miriam for an evening of discussion about the meaning of 50 years since the Six Day War. History and winter both teach us: darkness is a chance to heighten our other senses, an opportunity to let light in, a room for growth.*

May the Chanukah season bring both light and learning to you and your families.
