Finding Sanctuary and Strength in an Uncertain World

Recent days have reminded us of the longstanding vulnerability of the Jewish community and the resilience that Jews have cultivated.

Around the globe, sanctuaries that are meant to provide a peaceful environment have instead faced alarming acts of hostility. At Manhattan’s Central Synagogue this past Friday night, their Shabbat service was disrupted by an attacker who struck a congregant and assaulted a member of the security team. That same Shabbat Kehilat Kol HaNeshama, a liberal synagogue in Jerusalem, endured a break-in where vandals smashed windows and tore down community Pride flags.

Closer to home, the wave of intimidation has struck our own neighbourhoods with worrying frequency. Our Toronto community was left reeling after two locations of the iconic, Jewish-owned Kiva’s Bagel Bar and Restaurant were targeted in overnight attacks a few weeks ago. Unfortunately, this was not an isolated incident; it is part of a deeply frightening, escalating pattern of violence across the city. Jewish Torontonians find ourselves bearing a frightening wave of hate that has left many managing a heavy combination of anger and fear.

Amidst this rising tide, the Danforth Jewish Circle remains a steadfast anchor for you, your friends, and your families. We are holding space for the collective pain of our community members while standing determined in our solidarity with the broader Jewish community. Our commitment to being an open, inclusive, and joyful Circle will not be diminished by acts of hate. To ensure our community members can gather and pray with peace of mind, the DJC continues to work diligently behind the scenes, continually reviewing security measures with both our building and Toronto Police.

Let us hold fast to the beauty that is Jewish life and community. With that fullness of heart, let us continue to show up joyfully, support one another, and live our Jewish values out loud and proud.
