Following in Their Footsteps

Over the past month, the actions and rhetoric of those in the world who wish to divide, harm, and incite people has felt unbearable.  Yet, as the year rolls toward Purim and Passover, we are reminded of the struggle against injustice so inherent to many of the stories and historical figures that form our Jewish heritage.  We as a Board are committed to following in their footsteps and doing all we can to counterbalance the negativity we are hearing and feeling.

On February 3rd, following a terrible tragedy at a mosque in Quebec and a U.S. Executive Order to ban many Muslims from entering the country, members of the DJC (led by our Multi-Faith Committee) joined with our partners in the Danforth Multi-Faith Community to create a circle of peace around the Madinah Masjid.  We stood, and continue to stand, in solidarity with the Muslim community because we feel we have an obligation, as Jews and as humanitarians, to stand up against bigotry and hate.

As a part of our commitment to diversity and inclusivity, one recent change at the DJC is that we are now able to perform interfaith marriages.  This is a significant accomplishment, after much work from many of our dedicated staff and volunteers.

Today, our values are more important than ever.  This month’s calendar includes a number of opportunities to learn how ideas of resistance and liberation are fundamental to our Jewish past and present.  May we all be granted the courage to follow in the footsteps of our wise, peace-loving, and rebellious ancestors.
