Identity/Crisis

Today, I am sharing a podcast called “Identity/Crisis” which is hosted by Yehuda Kurtzer, president of the Shalom Hartman Insitute of North America. While the podcast has been producing episodes since 2020, I would recommend the recent offerings since October 7. Topics explored over the past two months include:

  • Perspectives of young Israelis

  • The question of the ethical considerations of the IDF’s actions in Gaza

  • How North American Jewish communities are reacting and responding

  • Interviewing Mickey Gotzin, Director of the New Israel Fund in Israel

  • Reflections of the Israeli Left

  • What it means to fight a “just war”

  • The current situation on college and university campuses

“In a frenzied media cycle, Identity/Crisis delves into the big ideas behind the news from a uniquely Jewish perspective. Host Yehuda Kurtzer, president of the Shalom Hartman Institute, talks with leading thinkers to unpack current events effecting Jewish communities in North America, Israel, and around the world, revealing the core Jewish values underlying the issues that matter to you.”

Bonus Material: Chuck Schumer

On November 29th, US Senator Chuck Schumer spoke on the Senate floor about the rise in Antisemitism in the United States. It is 40 minutes long and well worth a listen.

From Rabbi Ilyse Glickman:

This is our ongoing blog series to introduce the DJC community to podcasts, books, websites, and other media offerings that may expand our understandings of the current war in particular and Israel/Palestine more broadly. I hope you listen/watch/read these recommendations with curiosity, openness, and empathy. Please let me know what you think about today’s offerings: rabbiglickman@djctoronto.com. I look forward to the conversation.
