Today I have three offerings for our community. You may have noticed that last week I shared two videos and today I am sharing two more videos. Expressing pain, grief, sadness, and hope through the artistic medium of music sits close to my heart. Perhaps it does for yours as well.

A song for Kfir Bibas
January 18th marked the 1st birthday of Kfir Bibas, the youngest hostage currently in Gaza (today marks day 109). Kfir has now spent a quarter of his life in captivity. This is heartbreaking in so many ways. I invite you to watch this video called “קוראים לי ג׳ינג׳י / Kor’eem Li Gingi” (They call me Gingi). We continue to pray for his release as well as the release of all of the hostages.

Five for Fighting: OK
On January 18 Five for Fighting (John Ondrasik) released the song, “OK,” along with a heart wrenching documentary music video that speaks to the Hamas attacks on Israel of Oct 7th, 2023, and the cultural aftermath both in the United States and around the world.
“On October 10th, 2023, the Mayor of New York City, Eric Adams, made a powerful speech, decrying the celebrations of Hamas massacres across New York City. His words of conscience, “We Are Not Alright,” begin my new song and music video, “OK,” which addresses the barbaric Hamas October 7 attacks in Israel, and the global fallout that resulted.
Such is the theme of this song. In short, “We Are Not OK.”
— John Ondrasik

Ezra Klein: “I Have No Idea How This Ends”
The January 19 2024 episode of the Ezra Klein Show called “I Have No Idea How This Ends. I Have Never Seen It So Broken” with guest Thomas Friedman.
Episode Description:
It’s been just over 100 days since Hamas’s attack on Israel, and the costs of the war are staggering. In polling from late fall, 64 percent of Gazans reported that a family member had been killed or injured. Nearly two million Gazans – almost the entire population – have been displaced from their homes, and analysis of satellite imagery reveals that about half the buildings in the Gaza Strip have probably been destroyed or damaged.
Israel believes that more than 100 hostages are being held captive in Gaza, and polling reveals that Hamas has gained popularity among Palestinians while support for Israel has plummeted around the world. When this war ends, will Israel really be safer? Who will govern Gaza? What will be left of Gaza?

From Rabbi Ilyse Glickman:
This is our ongoing blog series to introduce the DJC community to podcasts, books, websites, and other media offerings that may expand our understandings of the current war in particular and Israel/Palestine more broadly. I hope you listen/watch/read these recommendations with curiosity, openness, and empathy. Please let me know what you think about today’s offerings: rabbiglickman@djctoronto.com. I look forward to the conversation.
