Tikkun Olam: Take Action – April 2022

Each month the Social Justice Committee recommends concrete things you can do to “heal the world” by taking a personal action to help make our world a more just place.

As we welcome Passover this month, we urge our DJC family to think about how they can help Ukrainian refugees in their desperate time of need. Please go to this link on the JIAS website to see how you can help. JIAS is the ONLY Jewish social service agency in the country solely dedicated to providing settlement services to immigrants and refugees. They were the Settlement Agreement Holder (SAH) for the Syrian refugee family the DJC sponsored and they are community leaders in the range of resources and support they can provide, including trauma-informed counselling and a formal partnership with the Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada.

The tragedy in Ukraine is shifting their efforts back to their roots which began with supporting and integrating Jewish Eastern European refugees (including Ukrainians) arriving in Canada since the 1940s. In addition to Ukrainians, JIAS expects that Russian Jews will want to come to Canada in fear of their safety, increased antisemitism, and retribution for their political beliefs.
